Welding a carbon steel lap joint boils down to a few key factors.

  • amperage setting
  • filler wire size and type
  • arc length
  • torch angle
  • shielding that hot tip of the filler rod

An amperage setting of one amp per thousandths of thickness will get you in the ball park.

Filler wire size is mostly personal preference but for 11ga cold rolled steel a 1/16" diameter ER70S6 filler wire works pretty good.

arc length should be equal to or less than electrode diameter

torch angle is pretty forgiving provided arc length is tight ..try to limit torch angle to around 20 degrees.

the hot tip of filler wire gets oxidized if not shielded by argon.  try to keep the hot tip of filler wire in the argon envelope.
