What is the best TIG cup for TIG Welding Aluminum?
Let's take a look at a few different options for TIG cups for aluminum.
A #5 standard collet body cup is a favorite with a lot of really skilled tig welders but there are also really skilled folks who prefer a #6 gas lens

7 Main Factors for Beginners Learning to TIG Weld Aluminum
- Electrode Type: Use 2% lanthanated (Blue), E3 (Purple), or LaYZr (CK Worldwide) tungsten. These handle AC tig welding well, resist contamination, and provide a stable arc.
- Shielding Gas & Flow Rate: Use 100% Argon at 2-3 CFH per cup number for proper arc stability and oxidation prevention. For example a # 5 cup would need 10-15 CFH
- Cup Selection: A #5 to #8 standard collet body or gas lens cup work well for most applications.
- AC Balance & Frequency:
- AC Balance: Start around 70% EN / 30% EP for good cleaning and penetration. Adjust to achieve a clean shiny puddle
- AC Frequency: Set between 100–150 Hz for better arc focus and control.
- Filler Rod Selection: 4043 and 5356 are the most widely used filler metals for aluminum. 4047 works well for cast aluminum, and 5356 for marine or structural applications. Match rod size to metal thickness (3/32" is a good starting point).
- Travel Speed & Heat Input: Keep a steady, moderate speed—too slow causes overheating, and too fast leads to poor fusion. A foot pedal helps fine-tune amperage as you weld.
- Cleanliness is Key: Brush with a dedicated stainless steel brush, wipe with acetone, and remove all oxidation before welding. Heavy oxidation or Contamination compromise weld quality.
Tip: Practice on ⅛” aluminum first—it’s easier to control than thinner material.
