I know there is no need to purge aluminum but dont know why .why purging is needed for steel and not for aluminum.
Simply what is the reactive element in ss and not in aluminum.
--------------------------------------------------
purging will help aluminum weld better in open root situations but is not always needed or called for.
same for carbon steel...it welds much better with purge but for pipe welding, using a back purge simply is not economical or efficient so is rarely done.
but stainless steel open butt welds need a back purge because of the granulation that occurs on the back side that is a surface flaw and also causes loss of corrosion resistance.
