I was thinking of taking a whack at learning how to weld inconel in order to build a really nice set of turbo headers for my race car. I know its an exotic metal and there are easier ways to build headers, but I like a challenge. I've heard its prone to cracking without proper cool down procedures. DO you have any tips or how-to's for welding inconel?
TIA

minimize heat input. inconel requires less amperage than stainless or carbon steel because it is less conductive.
if you weld inconel too hot or with too little filler metal or combination of both, you can get cracking. its not so much the cool down as it is the heat input, travel speed, and filler rod addition or lack of it.
also back purging with argon is critical .
