Tig welding Cobalt to Stainless Steel

What is the correct procedure? What type of filler rod? Do you need to preheat the SS prior to welding?

Sometimes engineers recommend a preheat for certain applications. I have not found a preheat necessary unless its really thick or highly restrained, or both.

Hastelloy W is your best bet and commonly used but using the same grade rod as the stainless is often done too.

for example if its 304 stainless welded to stellite 6b, 308 stainless is often used. limit heat input. let cool often.
