thinking vertical

This may sound odd. but can you start a vertical up weld from the top of work piece? Because at times i do,short strokes starting 1/4 inch from top of work piece, push up/ release trigger quickly drop below starting point and repeat ,similar to if you tack weld quickly so as if to make weld look as one continuous weld, all the strokes of the weld are going up so is it still a vertical up weld? sorry if did not explain very well. tx

Mark,
this might work for you for some jobs, but if you are wondering if if would fly on a welding test, I would say that if the test supervisor saw it, you would be failed right away.

Its called backstep welding. it helps with distortion sometimes. but all those stops and starts just beg for defects.

thanks for the post
