spatter

by Tim Jones

First off, let me tell you that I love this site! Thank You.
Now for my question. What causes excessive amounts of weld spatter. I have a Miller 185 and it seems like I get alot of spatter with this welder. Is it technique, is it welder settings or something else. I have used other welders and this one seems like the worst I have ever used. Thanks

Tim,

here are some things to consider...

too little wire speed or too much voltage

too much wire speed or not enouugh voltage

(basically not having voltage and wire speed matched)

too long wire stickout..make sure the tip is at least flush with the nozzle and maybe even protruding a tiny bit....then keep the stickout to less than 1/2" except for thin sheet metal

too much push angle on the gun
