for overhead welding i find it much easier if you use a piece of 1/16 plate and bend it at a 90 degree angle and tack weld in the middle of the plate/pipe that your welding at about an inch or two from the weld area. this way you can grip/rest one of your hands on the plate, rest the nozzle of the gun on your thumb/finger/side of hand for a steady consistent weld.
this way you wont have your hand directly on the metal that's welding. this tidbit helped me pass my 4g overhead mig cert test the first day it was presented to me.
