I need to pass a .045" test on 3/8 plate

I am a certified stick welder but the company I work for wants me to pass a 045 test on 3/8 plate. I have practiced on butt welds and its smooth as glass. when I go to do my coupon it looks like a dirtdobber nest. Any suggestions?
