if i am welding a piece of angle iron to a bit of 1/4' pipe how many amps do need every time i go to weld it its either too hot or too cold

it might have something to do with the temp of the pipe. generally you can figure one amp per thousands of inch up to 1/8"
that would be a max of 125 amps for 1/8" thick metal.
if your welding something 1/8" thick it will take roughly 125 amps....give or take.
