Hi guys this method works well for me.I have done it both on large and small diameter studs. When the stud has broken off and is flush or worse still less than flush i will apply a bit of weld metal to the end of the stud using an electrode (stick welding) thats obviously not to big other wise you will end up welding the stud to the steel.I do this to build up the metal on the stud and when its clear of the steel its bolted into i then weld a new bolt to the existing stud and remove it with a spanner.
If you weld the new bolt direct to the stud you run a good chance of welding both the stud and new bolt to the steel that the stud is bolted into not what you are trying to achieve!
