What are the definitions of: 1G,2G,3G,and 4G in regards to welding test?

the G stands for Groove weld and these positions typically refer to plate although 1g, and 2g can refer to pipe as well as plate.

1g flat or if pipe rolled while welding

2g horizontal where the axis of weld is horizontal

3g is vertical plate

4g is overhead plate
