I was just curious if discoloration when welding chome moly is oxidation issues like when welding stainless or titanium?

youre right...it is just oxidation. if you think about all the chromoly 4130 tubing that has been welded with oxy fuel, and severely oxidized, and still holding up 50 years later, it kind of makes you not worry too much about oxidation on 4130 chromoly.
Sure its nice to have shiny welds, but its not always possible or economical. It takes a big shielding gas cup and also requires letting the area cool frequently.
sometimes it might be worth the extra effort,
but not always. You have to get the job done in reasonable amount of time too,.
