when things are going wrong with TIG welding, its not 100 things going wrong...its only 2 or 3.
The 3 things I see beginners doing wrong are...
"One test is worth a thousand opinions" - JODY COLLIER
One thing I have learned in my welding career is that rarely can you say ALWAYS or NEVER.
Some people say Always push MIG.
Some say Always pull.
If you have ever been up inside a structural box where you can hardly see to push, you just plain have to pull.
good thing pulling works too. but keep a tight stickout.
walking the cup is a great technique for pipe welding.
But sometimes things are in the way and there is not enough space to walk the cup.
Walking the cup is great but you really need to be able to do other techniques when you get in a tight spot.
A TIG Finger is like having a prop in your pocket.
Being able to prop on hot metal without scorching your knuckles seems like a great idea.
6013 rods are definitely not my favorite but they were the very first rods I welded with in welding school.
After that, I never saw them again on any job I ever worked.
But I am trying to keep an open mind so I revisited 6013 rods and made this video.
A quick tip for mig welding vertical uphill is to use the recommended settings on the mig settings chart inside the machine ....but select one or two thinner settings.
So for example, if the mig machine chart recommends 19 volts and 280 ipm with .035 wire for 11ga steel that will probably work great for flat and horizontal but will be too hot for vertical uphill.
Just use the settings for 16 ga and you will be fine going uphill on 11ga
18 volts 220ipm and decreasing wire speed down 10% might work even better. miller likes it too hot imho.
tig welding and tig brazing are way different but similar techniques work on both.
I have found pulse settings to be very helpful to control heat and keep oxides out of the puddle.
getting the puddle started small is a key piece to the puzzle.
dont add rod too quickly.
wait a few seconds and keep a tight arc so that you can start the puddle small.
starting small is key
OK so I said the top 7 videos but this is number 8.
It is too good to leave out.
my good friend Andrew Cardin helped me make this video and I know it will help a lot of folks pass a test...get a job...and make a better life for their families.
May God Bless all of you in 2022.
