Back purging??

by Derek Hill
(Mississippi)

Where i work we have to back purge every type of filler metal we use on open roots cause of sugar. I understand that stainless an inconel will sugar without a purge. I'm just wondering if er80sb3 or any other type of carbon wire will sugar cause they're hell bent on purging it cause they say it'll sugar.

Thanks, Derek

Derek,
yes it will sugar, but not as much as the stainless or inconel. The 9% chromium in the er80sb3 is enough to cause some crusty critters. It all depends on the application as to whether it is tolerable. The welding engineer usually makes the call on this one.

thanks for you comment.
